Atul Gotsurve (I.F.S.) – Going Extra Mile…Always, 24x7x365

"Kisi Ki Muskurahto Pe Ho Nisar, Kisi Ka Dard Le Sake To Le Udhaar, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai…", is a famous song from the film Anari, released in 1959. This is the song which came to my mind when I first met the Regional Passport Officer, Pune, Mr. Atul Gotsurve. He belongs to Indian Foreign Services (I.F.S.), a very humble, witty and ground to earth officer. He is doing an extraordinary work at Pune, during his tenure he has left no stone unturned, to make passport service hassle free for the citizens. India needs more officers like him.

He is a Civil Engineer from MIT college, Pune, later he completed his M.Tech. from College of Engineering Pune (COEP). He cleared Indian Engineering Services (IES) and joined as Asst. Director at Central Water Commission, Delhi. His inclination was more towards the Civil Services as he believed that it is the most promising job as it involves executing public services on a day to day basis.

He cleared his exams and joined Indian Foreign Services (IFS) in the year 2004. He was sent on deputation to Mexico and Cuba in the respective embassies. He can speak Hindi, English, Marathi and Spanish language.

In the year 2014, he was posted as Regional Passport Officer, Pune. Earlier it used to take approximately 50-60 days to get appointment at passport processing centers, with many hassles and delays involved. He realized the pain and trouble the citizens were undergoing. After studying the entire service model involved in issuing passports, he decided to increase the supply to such an extent that the demand will automatically subside.

It was not easy, he had meetings with his teams, conducted customer service and handling training for the staff. He trained them on empathy and made everyone understand that every citizen who enters the passport office should be treated like the way we treat our own friends or relatives.

  1. Mini Library Inside Passport Office
  2. Extended Sitting Arrangements
  3. Shades To Get Relief From Scorching Sun
  4. India's First Mobile Passport Van
  5. Process 1600 Application a Day Against 1000 Applications Earlier
  6. Passport Processing Units at Solapur and Pimpri Chinchwad
  7. Created Videos Explaining Online Passport Applications
  8. Opened Post Office Seva Kendra At Kolhapur
  9. Wrote Several Articles On Passport Literacy
  10. Changed Office Timings to Increase Staff Efficiency For Better Citizen Service

Above mentioned are few of the initiatives which he had taken since he took over the office. The best part when I met him first time and later as well, he always keep mentioning about innovative solutions for the passport offices to serve the citizens in a better way. Knowingly or unknowingly he will mention about it, this shows that every moment he is living the dream of making Passport Services a delight for the citizens.

It's a treat meeting this upright, honest and dedicated officer, he is an achiever, the admiration goes a level high for him because achievers are many, but there are very few who are humble and grounded after the achievements, and he is one amongst them. I salute to this officer and wish we should have more and more officers in India like him!

Jai Hind!
